Why is my StackR wallet address different when importing the private key to a wallet like Metamask?

Introduction

Privy provides a "self-custodial EVM  embedded wallets for users so they can transact onchain even if they’ve never heard of web3"  using MPC architecture, so the wallet is essentially an Externally Owned Account (EOA) which users can export.

The current system uses smart accounts with gas sponsoring features for user interactions. However, this creates a disconnect when users export their private keys to wallets like MetaMask, where they can only access basic EOA (Externally Owned Account) functions rather than their smart account capabilities.

Why do I see a different wallet address in Metamask?

Importing the private key to Metamask give you access to the underlying signer, which has a different blockchain address than the smart contract with the assets.

Can I control the smart contract with Metamask.

Currently there is no easy way to control the smart contract wallet, however privy has a solution on the roardmap.

The Solution

Privy will be devoloping a solution to address current limitations in cryptocurrency wallet management. The company intends to create a wallet system that enables users to import and manage private keys independently of specific applications.

This new wallet functionality is a part of Privy's development roadmap. The system aims to resolve several practical concerns, including users' need for application independence and reliable access to their assets. The planned wallet will maintain smart account features while providing more user autonomy.

Privy is also collaborating with external partners to improve smart account compatibility across different wallet platforms. This development reflects ongoing efforts to address technical limitations in current wallet systems, potentially offering users more flexibility in how they manage their digital assets. The timeline for this feature remains unspecified, though the company acknowledges its importance to their overall strategic plan.
